Tech Forum February 2017 Update
A Note from the Board

Thank you to Delaware Technology Park for hosting Tech Forum at their new DTP@STAR incubator earlier this month. We enjoyed an up close look at the wet labs and collaborative spaces.

Tech Forum is ready to leap into Spring with our fourth annual Idea Challenge. Registration is now open for this fun and motivating ideation event on March 15th. Access to Hope Through Innovation is the theme around which teams will craft creative solutions for community issues. See below for all the details.

Ever wanted to do a hackathon? Check out what Open Data Delaware’s doing

The Technology Forum of Delaware members and friends toured the  DTP@STAR  business complex in Newark on Wednesday.

The name is derived from the expansion of the Delaware Technology Park to the STAR Campus, the former site of the Chrysler plant. DTP@STAR houses start-up companies and has a “wet lab” that is being used to develop new technology.

We got a tour of the DTP@STAR Incubator from Delaware Technology Park President Mike Bowman.

I was working at the University of Delaware in the late 2000s. I lived outside of Newark when Chrysler shut down its assembly plant and fired all 2,100 of its employees. Word of the closure started to spread in February of 2007 — almost ten years ago to the day.

If you’ve flirted with the idea joining a hackathon, you need to look at what Open Data Delaware is doing. The group’s aimed at exploring and using data to have a positive impact on Delaware.

One of the ways they’re looking to put that mission into action is through the Open Data Challenge. This series features six workshops spread over six months. There’s an Idea Challenge and, in June, a hackathon that’s part of the National Day of Civic Hacking.

Tech Forum presents our 4th Annual Idea Challenge - this year as part of The Open Data Challenge - a partnership with the State of Delaware's Government Information Center and Open Data Delaware. The Open Data Challenge will help to build tangible, sustainable solutions for community issues using innovation and data from the State's new Open Data Portal.

We have an exciting new theme this year - "Access to Hope Through Innovation". Teams, such as Eugene Young's Network Delaware and The Food Bank of Delaware, will compete to demonstrate that innovation, collaboration and passion can create solutions to important issues such as access to housing, food, education, healthcare and other resources.

Winning ideas generated at the 2017 Idea Challenge will move forward to Open Data Delaware's National Day of Civic Hacking in June where teams will have the opportunity to win cash prizes to implement their projects.
