Tech Forum February Update

A Note form the Board

The end of February means spring is right around the corner! I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to the warmer weather. Warmer weather means new opportunities, new beginnings, and a chance to soak up some sun! I think that's something we can all get behind.

This month's Augmented Reality Showcase was one of the coolest events we've had! The Archer Group and A&G gave excellent presentations on the current state and future of AR, and all of our demonstrators showed off their devices and applications. It was a fun event, and we had a packed room. It was great to see so many new faces.

Our next event will be "Tech Talks". Tech Talks are insights, ideas, and inspirations from local and regional “Tech Leaders” that will help our community better understand the innovative technologies and tech trends that will shape our economy over the next decade.   Tech Talks inspire the audience to see the future more clearly, foster better business decisions and enable the community to better participate in the evolution of our business community.  The presenter of a Tech Talk is not only carefully selected based on their powerful ideas but, the Tech Forum believes that these special (young or senior, accomplished or inspired) people will be integral to leading our community into the future.

We look forward to seeing you on 3/21!

The Technology Forum of Delaware took a look at augmented reality.

Often associated with Pokemon GGo phenomenon of a couple of years ago and the popular Snapshot social media app, the technology is moving into the commercial market.

Speakers from The advertising and technology agency Archer Group, Wilmington and Allen & Gerritsen, Philadelphia discussed a variety of applications for augmented reality.

Back in 2014, augmented reality (AR) was still a trend-to-watch at tech conferences. Now it’s everywhere with popular apps such as Pokemon Go and Snapchat allowing users to superimpose digital information onto their view of the surrounding world.

The sudden turn from the obscure cousin of virtual reality (VR) — which has been around since at least the 1990s, when bulky 3D arcade games sprung up at malls and shopping strips — to a regular feature on smartphones has some companies eager to explore the commercial uses of AR.

“I want to get people excited about the possibilities and help them understand what AR is and how they can use if for,” said David Wallin, manager of innovation at The Archer Group, a Wilmington-based digital marketing firm with an interest incorporating AR into its services.
