Tech Forum March 2017 Update
A Note from the Board

Our 2017 Idea Challenge was a huge success! It pitted teams of entrepreneurs, technologists, students, and community members against each other to come up with ideas on how to provide "Access to Hope through Innovation". For this year's event we partnered with Open Data Delaware, having each team incorporate open data into their concepts.

We would like to thank all of our sponsors and partners for helping us put on this great event, as well as, all of our teams: The Food Bank of Delaware, Wilmington University, The Committee of 100, and Network Delaware. And congratulation to Network Delaware for winning the 2017 Idea Challenge!

2017 Idea Challenge brings nonprofits
and tech community together

This civic engagement project
wowed judges at Idea Challenge 2017

The 2017 Idea Challenge, organized by the Technology Forum of Delaware, partnered local non-profit organizations with teams of entrepreneurs, students, and community members interested in innovative technology. The teams had three and a half hours to work out a rough draft of their idea.

The Food Bank of Delaware, Wilmington University, the Committee of 100, and Network Delaware, a new grassroots group launched by Eugene Young, formed this year’s line-up of organizations in need of a tech solution.

Community activists, entrepreneurs and those interested in technology teamed up with several local nonprofit organizations for the 2017 Idea Challenge last Wednesday. This is the fourth year of the event, hosted by Open Data Delaware and Technology Forum of Delaware. (See all our coverage of previous years here.)

The theme of this year’s event was “Access to Hope through Innovation.” Teams from the Food Bank of Delaware, Network Delaware, Wilmington University and the Committee of 100 worked for hours to come up with a strategy to increase access to food, job skills, community involvement or education by using technology in an innovative way. Once a plan was conceived, each team had to pitch their idea in front of a panel of judges.

Help honor immigrant entrepreneurs who have changed the world!

America was built on the twin bedrocks of immigration and entrepreneurship. And when immigration and entrepreneurship intersect, magic happens. Nominate an exceptional immigrant entrepreneur to the University City Science Center’s Innovators Walk of Fame.

The Innovators Walk of Fame (IWOF) celebrates Philadelphia’s innovation story by honoring individuals who have made groundbreaking contributions to the scientific and entrepreneurial communities. In 2017, IWOF will shine a bright light on immigrant entrepreneurs whose discoveries, inventions and contributions have transformed our world.

Nominees are not limited by industry or type of innovation. Instead, successful nominations will complete this sentence: “If not for this immigrant’s innovation, the world would be a lesser place because…”

The Science Center is accepting nominations through May 19, 2017. Nominees (living or deceased) must have a connection to the Greater Philadelphia region (including southern New Jersey and northern Delaware). Awardees will be announced and recognized at the Science Center’s Nucleus 2017 event on September 14, 2017.
